Bahamas Travelling Tips
Before embarking on your trip, it is a good idea to
do some research on the area you plan to stay in. Make
sure your vacation rental is at least one to three hour
drive or boat ride away from a major city. If you plan
on doing some diving, for example, find out if there
are any chartered trips in your area. Fortunately, our
Eleuthera rental properties are close to many popular
fishing and diving locations, and local charter boats
offer vacation packages as well. If possible, it is
a good idea to make arrangements before leaving to find
out rates and arrival/departure times, ensure availability,
etc.

Here are a handful of other tips to help ensure that your vacation in the Bahamas is stress-free and truly memorable:
- If you are a U.S. citizen, you do not need to change money, since the U.S. dollar is equivalent in value to the Bahamian dollar. Both U.S. and Bahamian dollars are accepted interchangeably throughout the islands. Also, make sure you have enough cash and/or traveler’s checks if you travel beyond Nassau or Freeport/Lucaya, as there are not always full banking services on every island.
- For an authentic Bahamas experience, explore the less “touristy” side of the Bahamas. The out-of-the-way areas often contain the most authentic Bahamian cuisine as well as handmade jewelry, clothing, and souvenirs. Make sure not to flash or even carry large sums of money while on these adventures.
- Make sure to negotiate your taxi fare, or ask the driver to turn the meter on, before your drive begins.
- Casual summer wear can be worn during the day any time of year; however, the evenings can get cooler from December through February, so be sure to bring a jacket or sweater if you are traveling at this time. It should also be noted that most restaurants and/or casinos require jackets for men in the evening, although the dress code in the Out Islands, including Eleuthera, is usually more laid back and flexible.
- Nude sunbathing and camping are illegal in the Bahamas, although topless sunbathing is permitted in some areas (the privacy afforded by cottage and bungalow rentals makes sunbathing much easier).
